You have ten minutes on a train, a phone in your hand and no interest in starting a 50-minute episode you won’t finish. That gap is what apps like GoodShort are built for: whole stories cut into episodes of about a minute and a half, filmed vertically, and designed so that each one makes you want the next.

GoodShort does that job well enough that millions of people use it, and its stories are easy to start. The catch is the bill. We priced every episode of GoodShort’s 20 most-watched series, and finishing a single one costs between $23 and $38 in coins. That is more than two months of Netflix’s cheapest plan, for what amounts to one long film.

What is GoodShort and who is it for?

GoodShort is a free app for vertical short dramas, published by Singapore New Reading Technology Pte. Ltd., the seller named on its App Store listing and in its user agreement. Its website lists 3,476 titles. The app’s own description calls them short dramas “adapted from novels”, and its categories run from Romance, Urban and Fantasy to Thriller, Suspense, Sci-Fi and LGBTQIA+.

It is big. The Google Play listing shows more than 50 million downloads and a 4.7 rating from 4.51 million reviews, and the US App Store shows 4.9 from 531,578 ratings.

The episodes are short. Across the opening episodes of its 20 most-watched series, the median runs about a minute and a half, and most fall between about one minute and under three. That makes GoodShort a fit for commuters, for people who like a story in small pieces during breaks, and above all for romance fans: 17 of those 20 series sit in GoodShort’s Romance category. If you already read billionaire or werewolf romance on a phone, you will recognise everything here.

GoodShort’s content library: genres, writing and production

Genres on GoodShort

GoodShort sorts its library four ways on its website: 11 genres, 26 styles (Toxic Love, Revenge, Second Chance, Reborn and so on), 46 character types (CEO, Alpha, Luna, Mafia, Miracle Doctor, Single Dad) and 45 story set-ups such as Contract Marriage, One-Night Stand, Substitute Bride and Fake Heiress. That vocabulary tells you what the app is about.

Its most-watched titles lean hard into romance. Among the 20 most-watched English series, 12 are billionaire romances, 8 turn on a contract marriage and 7 involve a secret baby, and most combine several. Mafia, revenge and werewolf stories turn up too, but in smaller numbers. Our lists of the best billionaire romance, contract marriage and secret baby dramas include GoodShort titles alongside the other apps.

Writing and pacing

Everything is built for watching episodes back to back. Episodes are short, the opening episodes are free, and the paywall arrives early: a typical series of 72 episodes gives away its first 8, about 11% of the story, so you hit the lock while the plot is still setting up its central conflict. Stories end when the arc is done rather than running for seasons, and every one of the 20 series we checked is listed as completed.

Production value

These are filmed productions with real casts. Each of the 20 most-watched series credits two named lead actors on its GoodShort page, and the Google Play listing promises up to 1080p. We haven’t run the app on a phone for this review, so we won’t grade the acting or the camerawork. The free episodes are there for exactly that, and you can judge a series on them before spending anything.

One thing worth knowing: a few recent App Store reviewers believe they’ve seen AI-made dramas on the app, and others praise a series for not having “bad AI dialogue or movement”. GoodShort’s website has no AI label or category among its tags, and GoodShort publishes no statement on AI that we could find, so we can’t say either way. Our live-action list collects series with credited casts across the apps.

Originality

GoodShort doesn’t hide that its stories come from web novels, and its tag list reads like an index of the genre’s best-known tropes. The same set-ups repeat from title to title: the hidden heir, the contract bride, the twins the billionaire didn’t know about. If that is what you came for, the app delivers it in volume. If you want something you haven’t seen before, the library’s size works against you, and one recent one-star reviewer summed the stories up as “highly repetitive and cliché”.

The GoodShort app: interface, playback and performance

We haven’t tested the app on a device for this review, so this part draws on the store listings and on the 150 most recent US App Store reviews, posted between 9 and 15 October 2026. Of those, 127 gave five stars and 19 gave one or two.

GoodShort’s listing promises “a personalized list of works you may like” and a recommendation feed, and its website shows the same genre, style and character filters the app uses to browse. Reviewers rarely mention finding shows at all; their complaints are about other things.

Viewing experience

Videos play full screen in portrait, one episode after the next. According to the Google Play listing, VIP adds 1080p playback and offline downloads, and removes ads.

Performance

Performance barely comes up. Of the 150 reviews, two mentioned glitches or loading trouble and none mentioned crashes or battery drain. The iPhone app is 178.9 MB, needs iOS 13 or later, and gets an update every week or two; the five most recent versions shipped between 20 August and 9 October, each with the same note about optimising performance. What reviewers do complain about is money. Twelve reviews mention the subscription, averaging 1.9 stars, and eight of those are about cancelling it or being charged again. Ads come up in eleven, and the coin cost of short episodes in many more.

How much does GoodShort cost? Coins, free episodes and VIP

How GoodShort coins work

Episodes after the free ones are unlocked with coins, one episode at a time. GoodShort is unusual in that it shows the price: its website lists the coin price of every episode, and the US App Store lists its coin packs, so the real cost can be worked out exactly.

The packs are flat: 500 coins for $4.99, 1,000 for $9.99, 1,500 for $14.99, 2,000 for $19.99 and 2,500 for $24.99. Every pack works out to 100 coins per dollar, so a coin is worth about a cent. Those are US prices; Apple charges different amounts in other countries.

We read the price of all 1,464 episodes in GoodShort’s 20 most-watched series. The 1,288 locked ones cost a median of 48 coins each, about 48 cents. Prices vary from episode to episode inside the same series, from 24 coins at the cheapest to 104 at the most expensive, so there is no single rate to quote.

Most locked episodes cost between 30 and 60 coins. Data: GoodShort's own episode pages.

Add up a series and the totals land in a narrow band: the cheapest of the 20 costs 2,312 coins to finish and the dearest 3,840, which is $23.12 to $38.40. The median is about $31.

Can you watch GoodShort for free?

Partly. Every series we checked starts free, with between 5 and 14 free episodes and 8 in a typical one, which is roughly twelve minutes of viewing. After that, the free route runs on bonus coins. GoodShort’s Google Play listing names a daily check-in, and App Store reviewers describe rewarded ads that pay coins or unlock episodes, with a daily limit.

It works, slowly. Ads come up often in recent reviews, and one reviewer put it bluntly: some ads run longer than the episode they unlock. At a median of 48 coins an episode, and with around 64 locked episodes in a typical series, earning a whole series through ads is unrealistic for most people. Use the free episodes to decide whether a story is worth paying for. Our guide to free GoodShort coins covers the legitimate methods and the scams to avoid.

GoodShort VIP subscription

VIP is the other way to pay, and it is sold by the week. The US App Store lists Weekly VIP at $5.99, $9.99 and $19.99, plus a $19.99 weekly subscription, without explaining what separates the tiers. The Google Play listing says VIP lets you watch premium dramas “FREE & AD-FREE”, download episodes for offline viewing and watch in 1080p, and that the daily check-in earns points that extend VIP.

Read the renewal terms before you tap. GoodShort’s user agreement says a membership “may thereafter automatically renew” until you end it, that you must cancel “at least 24 hours prior to” the next period, and that it does not give partial refunds. Cancel in the store you paid through. This is also where the worst reviews come from: a recurring complaint is people saying they couldn’t find how to cancel, or were charged again after deleting the app. Deleting the app does not cancel a subscription. Our guide to how coins work walks through cancelling on iPhone and Android.

Is GoodShort worth the money? GoodShort vs Netflix

On price per hour, no. Finishing one GoodShort series costs $23 to $38 in coins. Netflix’s cheapest US plan, Standard with ads, costs $8.99 a month, and Standard costs $19.99, according to Fox’s report on the March 2026 price rise. A single GoodShort series costs more than two months of Netflix with ads.

VIP changes the sum if you binge. A week at $19.99 costs the same as a month of Netflix Standard and, according to the Play listing, unlocks premium dramas for that week. Even one series costs more in coins than that, so if you plan to finish a series or two in a week, VIP is the cheaper way. Kept running, though, weekly billing at $19.99 adds up to roughly $86 a month, more than four times the price of Netflix Standard.

GoodShort pros and cons

Pros:

  • Easy to start: every series opens with free episodes, eight in a typical one.
  • Short episodes, around a minute and a half, that fit into any break.
  • Huge choice of romance tropes, with 3,476 titles listed on its website.
  • Real, credited lead actors on its most-watched series.
  • Prices are public: GoodShort shows the coin price of every episode, which DramaBox doesn’t.
  • Strong ratings: 4.9 on the US App Store and 4.7 on Google Play, with few complaints about crashes.

Cons:

  • Expensive to finish: $23 to $38 in coins per series.
  • Episode prices vary, so you can’t predict a series’ cost from its first locked episode.
  • The free route is slow, and the ads that pay for it can outlast the episodes.
  • VIP is billed weekly, and trouble cancelling it is the most common subject of recent one-star reviews.
  • Stories repeat the same web-novel set-ups from title to title.

Medians from our catalog. GoodShort's series run longest and give away the smallest share.

GoodShort is the most transparent on price and, by the numbers ReelShort publishes, a little cheaper per episode. It is the least generous with free episodes, though, because its series run longer and give away fewer. ReelShort offers the most free episodes per series and can be watched and paid for on its website as well as the app. DramaBox has the shortest series of the three, but it doesn’t publish what an episode costs. GoodShort review: our verdict

GoodShort delivers exactly what it promises: quick, addictive romance in episodes short enough for any break, with real casts and an app people seem happy to use. It is also unusually honest about price, because you can see what each episode costs before you pay. The problem is how much that is. At around $31 to finish a typical series, it is a pricey way to watch, and weekly VIP turns expensive fast if you forget to cancel.

Our rating: 3.5 out of 5. That is a 4 for content and app, pulled down by value for money and by how often people struggle to cancel.

Download GoodShort if you love romance tropes, watch in short bursts and are happy to stop at the free episodes or pay for one series you really want to finish. Skip it if you want long-form TV for your money, dislike recurring charges, or tend to forget subscriptions. If you do subscribe, cancel the same day so it can’t renew.

Have you watched any of the series above? Rate it on its page, for example Blood and Bones of the Disowned Daughter or Kidnapped by the Mafia, and help other readers decide what’s worth their coins. When you’re ready to try it, open GoodShort and start with the free episodes.
