The basic model

Short-drama apps give you the opening episodes of a series for nothing and charge for the rest. Payment happens through an in-app currency, usually called coins, plus an optional subscription. The details differ from app to app and change often, but the broad structure is similar across the big names, ReelShort and DramaBox included.

Knowing that structure helps you avoid the most common surprise, which is looking at your App Store or Google Play history after a weekend binge and finding more coin purchases than you remember making.

Most apps keep two balances in the same wallet.

Paid coins are what you buy with real money through Apple or Google. Coin packs appear in the in-app purchase list on the app’s store page, alongside any subscription plans. ReelShort’s terms of use state that “All sales of Virtual Currency and Virtual Goods are final and non-refundable, except as determined by Crazy Maple Studio in its sole and absolute discretion,” and DramaBox’s terms say “Coin (s) should be utilized in DramaBox only, and cannot be exchanged to any currency.”

Bonus coins, sometimes called reward coins, come from free activity: daily check-ins, watching video ads, completing tasks, or promotions attached to a paid pack. ReelShort’s coin guide draws the line clearly: “Paid coins never expire. Once you buy them, they stay in your account until you spend them. Free reward coins… usually come with a time limit.” The same guide says rewarded ads are capped: “There is usually a daily cap on how many you can sit through.”

Sitting outside both balances are the VIP subscriptions, recurring plans that unlock episodes across the catalog while they are active. They renew automatically. DramaBox’s App Store listing states that unless automatic renewal is turned off at least 24 hours before the current subscription period ends, the system extends the validity period and charges the renewal fee. ReelShort’s says the same thing in fewer words: “You will be charged within 24 hours before the start of each subscription period until you cancel your subscription.”

Why finishing a series costs more than you expect

The price is per episode, and there are a lot of episodes. Wikipedia’s overview of the format says a series may run 20 to 100, and only the first handful are free, so the cost multiplies quickly.

The episodes themselves work against you too. Paying for a one-minute clip does not feel like much in the moment, and the app asks you to pay right after a cliffhanger, when you most want to see what happens next.

The wallet then obscures what you have spent. You are paying in coins, not dollars, and the exchange rate varies with the pack you bought and any bonus attached, so it is easy to lose track of what an episode actually costs in real money.

How to estimate the cost of a series

You can work out a rough number before you commit, from three figures that are all visible in the app.

  1. Locked episodes: take the total episode count and subtract the free ones.
  2. Coins per episode: the unlock screen shows how many coins the next episode costs.
  3. Coins per dollar: divide the coins in a pack (paid coins only) by its price.

Multiply the first two to get total coins, then divide by the third to get dollars.

ReelShort publishes enough to run this all the way through. Its coin guide says “a standard episode usually costs 60 coins” and prices the entry pack at 500 coins for $4.99, which is 100 coins per dollar. Its free-access guide uses a 64-episode series where “only the first eight episodes are free to watch.” That leaves 56 locked episodes, 3,360 coins, and roughly $34 at the entry-pack rate. Larger packs carry bonus coins that bring the effective rate down: ReelShort lists $9.99 for 1,000 plus 150 bonus, $14.99 for 1,500 plus 300, and $29.99 for 3,000 plus 750.

DramaBox does not publish per-episode or pack prices on its own website, so on DramaBox you have to read the unlock screen and the coin shop inside the app before you can do this arithmetic at all.

Compare that result with the subscription price on the same app’s store page. On ReelShort the App Store lists one subscription at $19.99, which is less than the roughly $34 of coins that 64-episode series would take. On DramaBox the App Store lists memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, but neither the store listing nor dramabox.com says what each tier unlocks, so you cannot run that comparison from outside the app.

Legit ways to spend less

The official free-coin features are the only reliable way to reduce what you pay. They are slow, but they add up for patient viewers.

  • Check in every day. ReelShort’s help page says a daily check-in streak pays up to 165 coins, with the seventh consecutive day the largest reward of the week.
  • Watch reward ads, up to the daily cap. ReelShort states there is one: “You cannot watch unlimited ads to finish a show.”
  • Complete in-app tasks. DramaBox’s App Store listing says “You can unlock dramas for free by collecting free coins through completing tasks or simply by watching ads.” ReelShort’s says “You can unlock content by watching optional ads, completing rewarded tasks.”
  • Spend a new bonus balance early, before it expires and goes to waste.
  • Pick your series before you pay. Watch the free episodes of a few shows and commit only to the one you want to finish.

What does not work: websites and videos offering “free coin generators,” hack codes, or modded versions of the app. Coin balances live on the app company’s servers, and outside tools cannot add to them. How auto-renewing subscriptions work

When you subscribe through the app, the billing runs through your Apple or Google account, not the drama app. The plan renews at the end of each period and charges the payment method on file until you turn renewal off.

Deleting the app does not cancel the subscription. Google’s help page on subscriptions says it outright: “When you uninstall the app, your subscription won’t cancel.” Apple bills the subscription to your Apple Account rather than to the installed app, so removing the app there does not stop it either.

Google also states what happens after you cancel: “When you cancel a subscription you’ll still be able to use your subscription for the time you’ve already paid.” You just are not charged again.

Cancel on iPhone or iPad

Open Settings, tap your name, then tap Subscriptions. Choose the drama app’s subscription and tap Cancel Subscription, scrolling down if you do not see the button. Apple adds: “If there is no Cancel button or you see an expiration message in red text, the subscription is already canceled.” Its instructions are on the page about canceling a subscription from Apple.

Cancel on Android

Go to subscriptions in the Google Play app, select the subscription you want to cancel, tap Cancel subscription and follow the instructions. Google’s steps are on its page about how to cancel, pause, or change a subscription on Google Play.

If you subscribed through the app’s website instead of a store, you will need to cancel through that account. ReelShort’s terms say: “To cancel, simply log in to your app account, go to the VIP page, and follow the clearly displayed Subscription Management instructions,” and require the request on or before the day prior to the billing date.

FAQ

Do purchased coins expire?

On ReelShort, no: its coin guide says “Paid coins never expire,” while free reward coins “usually come with a time limit.” DramaBox does not publish an equivalent rule, so check the wallet or help section inside that app. Spend bonus coins first either way.

Can I get a refund for coins I bought?

The apps’ own terms generally treat coin purchases as final. Purchases made through Apple or Google can still be submitted for review through their refund processes, which are covered in our safety guide. Approval is not guaranteed.

Is a VIP subscription cheaper than buying coins?

It depends on how much you watch. On ReelShort you can check: a 64-episode series with eight free episodes costs about $34 in coins at the published rates, against a $19.99 subscription on the App Store. Estimate the coin cost of what you want to watch and compare it with the listed plan price.

Does deleting the app stop my subscription?

No. The subscription is billed through your Apple or Google account and keeps renewing until you cancel it in your account settings.
