What Things I Wanted to Say is about
Whit Lancaster moves through an elite prep school where legacy and money decide who matters, and nobody there is willing to test him. He is dangerous in ways the other students only half understand, and that is most of his appeal.
Then an outsider crosses into his orbit and refuses to be impressed by any of it. Whit answers with a bargain rather than a threat. She can let him take her apart privately, on his terms, or she can decline and be taken apart in public where the whole school gets to watch. Every version of yes costs her something. What the arrangement turns into is a contest over who gives way first, run on wanting as much as on leverage.
